UMass Lowell Holds Off UMBC 59-54

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) -- Akeem Williams scored 18 points as Massachusetts Lowell recovered from a slow start to beat UMBC 59-54 in America East Conference play on Sunday afternoon.

Four free throws by Rodney Elliott in the final two minutes put UMBC within three, and Elliott grabbed an offensive rebound for a second chance with 0:12 to go. His 3-point attempt in the final 2 seconds didn't drop, and Kerry Weldon hit two free throws for Massachusetts Lowell to end the game.

UMBC (4-10, 0-1) jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the River Hawks went the first 6:40 without scoring. Massachusetts Lowell (2-11, 1-1) bounded back, outscoring UMBC 34-16 in the remainder of the first half to go up 34-31 at intermission. Williams scored five straight points to give the River Hawks their largest lead of the game, 41-31, with 17:57 to go.

Elliott led the Retrievers with 14 points and six assists.
