Troopers Investigating DUI Nearly Hit By 2nd DUI Suspect

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Troopers directing traffic around the scene of a crash involving a suspected drunk driver in Wicomico County early Friday escaped with their lives when another suspected drunk driver slammed into one of their vehicles, authorities said.

Troopers were detouring westbound traffic on Route 50 near Walston Switch Road in Parsonsburg after a Chevrolet driven by a 26-year-old man, who was believed to be intoxicated, left the road and crashed into a tree about 2 a.m., Maryland State Police spokesperson Elena Russo told WJZ in a phone interview.

About an hour later, while a tow truck was hauling the Chevrolet up an embankment, troopers were able to jump out of the way as a Ford Fusion driven by a 25-year-old man slammed into the back of a trooper's Ford Explorer, Russo said.

None of the troopers involved was hurt.

Both drivers were taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving. At last check, one of them was in custody at the Maryland State Police barracks in Salisbury and the other one was being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center.

Both drivers are expected to face DUI charges. It was not immediately clear whether either man had an attorney.
