Tiny Berlin, Md., Named 'Coolest Small Town' In U.S.

BERLIN, Md. (AP) -- Berlin has been named "America's Coolest Small Town" in a nationwide contest.

Budget Travel gave the small Maryland town top honors Tuesday. Berlin beat out 14 other small towns in online voting since January. Nearly 138,000 votes were cast.

Berlin received more than 28 percent of the total with 39,000 votes.

Cazenovia, N.Y., came in second, followed by Buckhannon, W.Va., Travelers Rest, S.C., and Mathews, Va. in the top five.

Budget Travel noted Berlin is good for beach lovers, hikers, bird watchers and history lovers alike. It was also the backdrop for films "Tuck Everlasting" and "The Runaway Bride."

Mayor Gee Williams gathered with residents Monday to celebrate at Burley Oak Brewery as the town was leading in the vote. The town had promoted its cool campaign on social media.
