Thieves Get Away With Nearly $16,000 Worth Of Necklaces At Arundel Mills

HANOVER Md. (WJZ) -- On the run with thousands of dollars in stolen diamonds. Anne Arundel County Police are looking for a group behind the jewelry theft.

Christie Ileto has more.

Brazen, bold and caught on camera. New surveillance video Wednesday--released by police--catch four men stealing more than $15,000 in diamond necklaces from Royal Jewelers at Arundel Mills.

"These guys came in and did a flim-flam, so to speak," said Lt. T.J. Smith. "A distraction-style theft."

Police say the four work as a team distracting clerks and acting as a lookout, while the others commit the crime.

One of them lay his jacket over the counter and, when no one was looking, reached into the case and stole the diamonds.

"These guys were pretty bold at 7 p.m....to do a theft like this so I guess this isn't their first time doing something like this," Smith said.

"Stealing jewelry, that's kind of harsh," said Dominique Stewart.

Police say the jewelry theft happened just one day before a woman was arrested for stealing a pair of boots inside the same mall and then pepper-spraying security, hoping to get away.

Police say Cierra Scott was caught in the mall parking lot.

"I didn't hear about the jewelry one but I knew about the girl inside Broadway Shoes," said Lynette James.

Meanwhile, police hope to catch the group behind this latest brazen robbery and put an end to the bold thefts happening at the popular mall.

Police say the thieves were last seen running into the woods near the mall.

In a statement, mall officials said, "As part of our comprehensive security program, we are utilizing our advanced surveillance technology to assist the Anne Arundel County Police Department in their ongoing investigation of this incident. For more information, contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at 410-222-8700."

Anyone with information about the incident should call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.
