Did ACC Official's 'Miscommunication' Cost The Terps?
The Maryland - Duke rivalry is just about over. They still have a chance to face once more in the ACC Championship or the NCAA Tourney. Their last regular season meeting was Saturday, February 15th. The game lived up to the rivalry. The game was decided by the last shot of the game, taken by Maryland's forward Charles Mitchell. If it fell, Maryland would have likely won. But was that the true deciding factor of the game?
The ACC has made a statement that "a miscommunication occurred between the officials and the table crew" when the possession arrow was not changed on a jump ball with 16:58 left in the second half. With another tie-up and jump ball at 6:39 left, Duke got the ball and scored on a layup from Duke's Amile Jefferson to tie the game.
Chris Knocke, color commentator for the Maryland Terrapins on 105.7 The Fan, as well as many Maryland fans noticed the mistake but Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon didn't pick up on it.
The end result of the game was a Duke win, 69-67. An ACC spokesperson told the Baltimore Sun that the result of the game will not be changing the outcome of the game due to the mistake made by officials.
