The Orioles Defeat Red Sox 13-9 In Epic Slugfest

Baltimore (WJZ) -- The Baltimore Orioles go on a hitting spree to defeat the Boston Red Sox 13-9 on Wednesday night.

The Orioles knew they needed to win this game after dropping the first two of the series. But they probably didn't expect to score 13 runs without a single homer to get the job done. Red Sox RF Mookie Betts picked up where he left off last night with a home run in the first inning to give Boston an early 1-0 lead. Then the Orioles went to work on their pitching staff.

Mark Trumbo drove in two in the bottom of the 1st inning with a single to right. Matt Wieters hit a sacrifice fly to score Chris Davis a few pitches later. Pedro Alvarez followed that score with a double of his own to bring in one more and give Baltimore a 4-1 lead. Mookie Betts would homer to left center in the second inning to tie the game at 4-4 following a home run from Chris Young off of Mike Wright.

Boston and Baltimore would exchange leads until the bottom of the 6th inning when Matt Wieters grounded into a fielder's choice to second which led to a Chris Davis score and gave Baltimore a 9-8 lead. The Orioles would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game. A ground out by Ryan Flaherty in the 6th coupled with singles by both Matt Wieters and Jonathan Schoop in the 7th would give Baltimore its final 4 runs that would seal the game for the Orioles.

SP Mike Wright would only get 2 and 2/3 innings of work in this one with 6 earn runs allowed on 6 hits and 2 strikeouts. Brad Brach picks up his 5th win of the season and Zach Britton logs in his 15th save this year. Baltimore scored 13 runs on 14 hits and 0 home runs.

The Baltimore Orioles will look to tie the series on Thursday as Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6 6.36 ERA) takes on Ricky Porcello (7-2 3.68 ERA).
