The Kentucky Derby: Big Hats, Horses And $1,000 Drinks

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest events in horse racing each year. But it's grown to be about much more than just the action on the track.

So what makes the "Run for the Roses" so special? The Big Hats Did you know women's Derby Hats have been around since the first race in 1875?

The fashion trend turned to bigger and more colorful hats in the 1960's.

Celebrities and Parties, The Kentucky Derby has become a hot spot for celebrities to show off their flashy wardrobe.

Over 170,000 people attended the 2015 Kentucky Derby, a track record. The Classic Drink The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage at the Derby for nearly a century.

According to Churchill Downs racetrack, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served during Kentucky Derby weekend.

The track even offers a $1,000 version of the cocktail, known as the "Woodford Reserve Mint Julep"!
