Suitland Woman Sentenced For Cashing Dead Person's Checks
GREENBELT, Md. (AP) -- A woman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for cashing a dead woman's Social Security checks for 11 years.
Fifty-six-year-old Theresa Snead of Suitland was also ordered to pay more than $115,000 in restitution at sentencing Tuesday in federal court in Greenbelt.
According to Snead's plea agreement, a woman who lived with Snead and received Social Security retirement benefits died in 2003.
Prosecutors say the woman's death was not reported to Social Security and her benefit checks continued to be sent to Snead's home.
Authorities say Snead cashed the checks each month at a liquor store.
