Steve Davis: The NFL Draft

Finally, everyone can tear up their mock drafts and wonder where they went wrong. and we can start assessing what the Ravens and everyone else in the AFC North has. Soon, the rookies will be in and we will see them on the field.

One thing to keep in mind. The Ravens (and everyone else) get two weeks less with their rookies than last year. All we hear is how tough it is to get players ready with this drastic reduction in practice time and the time players are allowed around the facility and their coaches.

There was a story that maybe the NFL would push the draft even later into May. I can't understand how that is a good thing, and why the coaches don't stand up and raise a huge stink. That is even less time rookies get with their playbooks. It may not hurt the Ravens in a year like this where they aren't counting on a bunch of rookies to have an immediate impact. But it might be a big factor in other years, or with other teams, particularly the quarterbacks.

It doesn't make sense to me, why the NFL changes so many things. Don't get me wrong. I like that the NFL is willing to make changes; I wish MLB would do the same, instead of sticking with the "we've always done it this way" mantra. That said, pushing back the NFL draft seems counter-productive.

The Ravens start the season with three straight division games. They have a new offensive staff and might start with their running back suspended. It's time to get to work.
