Steve Davis: That Nationals Sure Seem Like Hypocrites

Isn't it funny how the Nationals keep crying poor about the MASN deal? In fact, they cried so hard to Major League Baseball about not getting enough money out of MASN that they convinced the league to loan them $25 million.

So, if they needed a loan of $25 million, how is it that they could afford to give Max Scherzer a $50 million dollar signing bonus?

Signing bonuses are uncommon in baseball. I know they paid the deal out with deferred money, but that's a big check to write up front.

I should point out that the owner Ted Lerner, according to Forbes is worth $4 billion and is the second richest owner in baseball. Thus, he isn't short on cash, and if he wants to keep his personal and baseball separate, he could have loaned his team the money himself.

This is all such a farce.

Do the Nationals have a great broadcasting deal? No.

Did the Lerners know this when they bought the team? Yes.

Should Peter Angelos feel bad for them and rip up the old deal and give them a new one? I sure hope not.
