State Trooper Struck On I-95, 1 Other Injured

ELKRIDGE, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a trooper helping disabled motorists on Interstate 95 was injured when a car hit his cruiser.

It happened about 1:30 p.m. Thursday on I-95 north of Route 100 in Elkridge. Twenty-seven-year-old Trooper Tristen Phillip was in his marked patrol car on the shoulder behind the disabled vehicle, the department said in a news release.

Police say a car driven by 31-year-old Rodney Irons Jr. of Silver Spring veered off the highway onto the shoulder, hitting the cruiser. The impact pushed the cruiser into the disabled car.

Troopers say Phillip was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. Irons was taken to a local hospital. The couple in the disabled vehicle declined medical treatment.

The crash is under investigation.
