State Racing Commission Approves Off-Track Betting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It looks like there will be off-track betting at the Timonium Fairgrounds.

The State Racing Commission has approved a proposal to allow year-round off-track betting.

A unanimous vote by the commission means the Fairgrounds will be a simulcasting site in Baltimore County.

Maryland Jockey Club President and General Manager Sal Sinatra issued a statement saying, "We are looking forward to opening our off-track betting facility in Timonium. We also look forward to continue building a strong relationship and partnership with the local community. We believe there's tremendous potential in Maryland Thoroughbred racing and we want to build on its rich tradition. By growing our off-track network we hope to create convenience for our customers and exposure to racing throughout the state."

However, there is serious opposition within the surrounding community to the move and some lawmakers are drafting bills to try and stop off-track betting at the site.
