State Police: Panhandling Scam Causing Backups, Crashes In Maryland

NEW CARROLLTON Md. (WJZ)-- Maryland State Police are warning motorists to avoid stopping on exit ramps for individuals allegedly flagging down vehicles for help in order to beg for money.

The suspects are reportedly pretending their vehicle is broken down, waving down motorists on exit ramps and asking for money. The incidents are causing major traffic delays and even crashes, according to state police.The incidents occurred on the exit ramps in the area of Route 450, Annapolis Road and both the inner and outer loops of I-495.Witnesses describe the panhandlers as ethically diverse and using a variety of vehicles ranging from cars to SUV's.
