State Police Investigating 2 Carjackings, 3 Related Crashes On I-83 South

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A man is in custody after he allegedly carjacked two women and crashed several cars along one of Baltimore's busiest highways.

Maryland State Police are investigating two carjackings and three related crashes that happened Thursday morning on I-83 south between Timonium Road and Northern Parkway.

According to police, a man from Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, was driving a Honda Civic, when he was involved in a three-vehicle crash on the JFX at Timonium road around 8:30 a.m.

The 28-year-old driver of the Honda flagged down a woman driving a Lexus and allegedly carjacked her.

The suspect then crashed the Lexus at I-83S at the Jones Falls Expressway and then carjacked another woman driving a Toyota Corolla.

When the suspect crashed the Corolla at I-83S at Northern Parkway, he again tried to carjack another female driver but was stopped by a Good Samaritan. The suspect tried to carjack the Good Samaritan, but the driver was able to pull him out of the vehicle before he drove away.

A Baltimore City Sheriff's deputy took the suspect into custody and then turned him over to Maryland State Police. The suspect was treated for injuries at Sinai Hospital.

His identity is being withheld pending charges.

One person, a passenger in a carjacked vehicle, suffered minor injuries.

Maryland State Police was not involved in a police pursuit of the suspect. The only road closed during this incident was the ramp at Northern Parkway.

"We're trying to figure out his mindset at this time," Ron Snyder, of the Maryland State Police, said. "What circumstances led to the initial crash and then what led to the subsequent alleged carjackings and crashes at that point in time. Obviously, a very unique situation to be linked to two carjackings, three crashes and an attempted carjacking all within a half-hour time frame."

Police will release more information as their investigation continues.
