State OKs Renovation Of Old Factory At Canal Place

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The state will help renovate of an old factory building in Cumberland as part of the Canal Place tourism development.

The Board of Public Works voted Wednesday to commit about $1.2 million toward redevelopment of the Footer's Dye Works building.

A private firm headed by Michael Joy of Washington, D.C., plans to invest another $6 million, using state and federal historic preservation tax credits to defray the cost.

The renovated structure will have a restaurant and brew pub on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors.

The project also will get $150,000 from the U.S. Interior Department and $50,000 from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.

Canal Place is at the western end of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
