St. Mary's County Man Charged With Abusing Infant

MECHANICSVILLE,  Md. (AP) -- A Mechanicsville man is facing abuse charges after St. Mary's County authorities say he ignored an infant's signs of distress and dropped the critically injured 7-month-old off at daycare.

The sheriff's office said in a release Thursday that after 30-year-old Nathan Bailey dropped the child off, the daycare provider sought medical assistance.

The sheriff's office says investigators were called Tuesday to a D.C. hospital, where doctors determined that the infant's head injuries were the result of the child being a "battered baby." The infant remains in critical condition.

The sheriff's office says detectives determined Bailey caused the injuries and routinely dropped the child off, ignoring the child's distress.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Jennifer Stone says Bailey is not related to the infant. He's charged with first-degree assault, child abuse and child neglect.
