Snow Storm Cost Metro $7 Million In Lost Revenue

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The blizzard that hit the Washington region last week resulted in a loss of about $7 million in revenue for Metro.

Radio station WTOP reports that loss is a combination of the fact the system was shut down for two days and rides were free on Monday when the system had limited service. Passengers also took fewer rides than usual during the middle of the week.

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld did not have exact numbers yet on what Metro's snow cleanup efforts have cost, but he says the combination of costs and lost fare income is expected to be "significant." Metro's costs include hotel rooms so essential workers could stay on the job, contractors to clear and move snow and overtime pay.
