Snow Removal Causing Heavy Traffic Across Md.
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As the desperation grows to get rid of all the snow, problems persist. Piled-up snow is creating major delays around the area, as thousands hit the road for the first time since the record blizzard.
Tracey Leong with more on how the ongoing snow removal is causing a traffic mess.
It's mounds of snow that are creating dangerous road conditions. And with people getting back to work and finally out of their homes after the storm, some roads are just not ready to handle that heavy traffic.
Bumper to bumper traffic along Reisterstown Road--a nightmare for people desperate to get home.
"This is awful. Absolutely awful," said Kathy Deck.
Drivers like Kathy Deck were unable to leave their parking lots after work.
This gridlock trapped commuters for several hours.
"I literally was sitting upstairs, waiting and looking out the windows because we're on the fourth floor, and I was looking and looking, and I was like, 'Can we chance it?'" said Deck.
Maryland is struggling to get back to normal after the historic blizzard.
As crews work to clear out the snow, they're forced to block traffic, which is one of the main reasons we're seeing such a traffic headache.
Hundreds of contractors are working around the clock, cleaning up Mother Nature's record-breaking mess.
"Big storm, and you expect anything after a storm like that," said Stanley Schocket.
With businesses and schools opening back up, traffic will only get heavier.
"Rush hour today was challenging with a number of choke points, but it was manageable," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
The chaos is spreading beyond major and onto the highways, also causing multiple accidents.
The winter blast is impacting routes across the state, leaving drivers with limited options.
"You just have to patiently wait. There really is nothing you can do. You can't get upset, you just have to wait it out," said Gwen Bethea.
Baltimore City is expecting heavy traffic Thursday and urging people to use public transportation--if possible--to help lighten the commute.
