Slain WWII Soldier's Remains Found, Buried In Md. 70 Years Later

ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland soldier killed in WWII has been laid to rest more than 70 years after his death.

Tech. Sgt. Hugh Moore's remains were buried Tuesday at Cherry Hill Methodist Church Cemetery, 2 miles north of Elkton. The 36-year-old was killed in 1944 after his plane was shot down over Papua New Guinea.

But his remains were never recovered. Still, his parents bought a grave plot at Cherry Hill cemetery and put in a gravestone with Moore's name on it, just in case he was ever found.

Moore's parents and eight siblings all died waiting for him to come home.

In September, the Pentagon announced that Moore's remains had at last been recovered. Dozens of Moore's family members attended his funeral Tuesday, and he was buried with full military honors.
