Shopping At Local Business In May Supports Women's Health Org

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A group of Baltimore businesses are teaming up to raise money for a non-profit that provides aid to women and children around the world.

For the entire month of May, dozens of businesses in Fells Point are donating a portion of their proceeds to support the international health organization Jhpiego.

Eat, shop, and play. All for a good cause.

"Our mission is to prevent the needless deaths of women and their families around the globe," said Kayla Britt, with Jhpiego.

Jhpiego, located in Fells Point, is a global health organization and affiliate of Johns Hopkins University.

"We really are trying to support women and newborns through childbirth and I think it's something that is important to everyone," Britt said. "You know, everyone has a mother or knows a mother, so it's important for everyone across the world."

For the second year, surrounding Fells Point businesses are dedicating a portion of their May proceeds to Jhpiego.

"Part of us being where we are is trying to help out a neighbor," said Kilwins owner David Gilmore.

"A very worthy endeavor, you know. Saving the lives of mom's and children," said Debra Romano, with Bop Pizza.

Businesses are encouraging people to join their effort and shop locally to help families in more than 40 countries.

"A little bit from me, a little bit from other businesses, so that kind of adds up," said Gilmore.

"Whether it's down the street, or across the ocean, and if they're able to help somebody, of course, it's a good feeling," Romano said.

Special events in Fells Point are planned for the remainder of May to support Jhpiego.
