One loud bang after the other as an intense scene unfolds at the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Prince George's County.

The D.C. police chief says it all started with a domestic armed kidnapping around 5:30 p.m. Thursday near 3rd and T Street.

The suspect then led police on a wild chase to the U.S. Census Bureau, where authorities say a guard tried to intervene and was shot. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police say the chase then carried back over to the streets of D.C. before ending along the 1200 block of H Street, where authorities say they blocked the suspect in with his car.

"We started hearing all these sirens and then we looked down the street and a pickup truck pulled in between 7th and L. And he stopped and he looked, and then he immediately backed up. And after he backed up, a Honda Accord came flying through the intersection going like 60 down 7th Street, then he made a left on K and like 60 cops followed him," one witness said.

More gunfire was exchanged and an officer was shot before the suspect was hit with bullets himself and taken into custody.

Several roads around the city were shut down because of the chase.

It's unclear where the kidnapping victim was throughout the chaotic scene of events.

No word yet on the condition of the officer shot along H Street.

The D.C. police chief says the suspect who was shot was conscious when they took him into custody.

Thousands of people work at the U.S. Census Bureau.
