According to Baltimore City Police, the incident happened around 5 p.m. in the mall vestibule area near Shoppers and Marshalls. No one was reported injured.

Baltimore Police say the suspect,  a 42-year old man from Baltimore, who was being detained by employees for shoplifting inside a Rainbow clothing store, escaped and was chased by several employees.

When the suspect reached the exterior vestibule of the mall, he pulled out a handgun and fired at least one shot in the direction of the store employees, police say.

The suspect exited the mall and began to run across the parking lot. Police say an officer working overtime at another store in the mall witnessed the shooting occur. As the suspect went to make his getaway, the officer chased the suspect on foot to the 2300 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway.

Police say the officer stopped the suspect and apprehended him behind Frederick Douglass High School., recovering a handgun from him.

Smith says a person of interest is in custody, and a gun has been recovered. Charges are pending.

In a tweet, Smith says officers were able to catch the suspect on foot, chasing him across the street. "Ofc. in right place at right time, @BaltimorePolice holiday deployment, able to get this guy before anyone hurt," he said.

The mall is still open for business.
