Sheriff's Office: Deputy Shoots Man Carrying Knife

WALDORF, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a Charles County deputy sheriff shot and wounded a man holding a knife during a domestic dispute call.

When deputies responded to Charleton Court in Waldorf on Wednesday evening, officials say the man was in the driveway armed with a knife.

Officials say the man, who appeared agitated, refused commands to drop the weapon and approached one deputy, who fired and struck the man at least once in the abdomen.

The deputies provided aid to the man and officials say he was conscious and alert as he was flown to a hospital. They say the woman was treated on the scene for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Officials did not identify the deputy who fired, but say he is a nine-year veteran.
