Sheriff, Gun-Control Group Spar Over Comments

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- A gun-control group is petitioning for revocation of a county sheriff's certification to teach other law-enforcement officers after his comments about gun rights.

A spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence says he is astonished that Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis is allowed to train other officers.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reports the group is upset about Lewis' comments that "an all-out civil war" would break out if the federal government were permitted to strip county citizens of their right to bear arms.

Lewis says the courses he teaches have nothing to do with the Second Amendment and the coalition is twisting his words to imply that he wouldn't enforce the law.

The coalition said Tuesday it has collected nearly 1,500 signatures seeking revocation of Lewis' certification.
