Shark Tracked Off Ocean City, Maryland Coast

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A female white shark was made its way towards the coast of Ocean City Thursday afternoon.

An 8-foot, 460 pound shark was "pinged" by OCEARCH after it touched the surface near the Maryland coast.

A ping is determined when the tagged shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water then transmits a signal to a satellite overhead. Then the transmission sends back an estimated geo-location.

OCEARCH is a recognized world leader in generating scientific data related to tracking and biological studies of keystone marine species such as great white and tiger sharks, in conjunction with conservation outreach and education at a global scale.
