Severe Weather Tears Through NE Baltimore Neighborhood

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — When turning onto Chesley Avenue in northeast Baltimore, the trail of downed trees has some in the neighborhood wondering if this is more than just another summer storm.

"You could literally see what looked like a tornado went right up the street and just literally ripped all of the trees out of the ground," resident Michael Sample said.

There is no official word from the National Weather Service on just what kind of system tore through the area.

As far as people like Carolyn Dallas are concerned, it's a miracle no one was hurt.

"Normally, my mom would be sitting on the porch so I'm glad she wasn't out there." Dallas said.

Her front yard is buried in branches. Up the road, a giant tree fell and now lays right in the middle of the road, and it only gets worse from there.

After several days of rain, some trees can no longer absorb any more moisture.

The Pearce family was home as it happened.

"It sounded like a freight train went down the street and dropped a bomb as it went by." Morris Pearce said.

WJZ got a closer look at the Pierce family's house, where a tree seems to have only damaged part of the roof.

"There's some water inside of my house in this corner." Virginia Pearce said.

Around Baltimore, flooding is running rampant.

Back on Chesley Avenue, neighbors are coming together for what's bound to be at least a few days worth of cleanup.

The lingering question- what caused it?

"It had to be something else, just don't see rain doing this type of damage." Dallas said.
