Sentencing Set For Former Minor Leaguer In Child Sex Case

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A former high school baseball coach faces sentencing in Frederick for sexually abusing the teenage son of a host family during his minor league baseball career.

The hearing Thursday for 42-year-old Eric Estes, of Vancouver, Washington, comes four months after he pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse in a plea deal.

The conviction carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence. Prosecutors have agreed to recommend that Estes serve three years of supervised probation, register as a sex offender and get any recommended counseling after a psychological evaluation.

Estes lived with the Frederick family in the late 1990s while playing for the Frederick Keys, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

The public school system in Vancouver began proceedings to terminate Estes' employment in January. He worked at Skyview High School.
