Sentencing Postponed For KKK Member Convicted Of Gun Charge
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A judge has delayed the sentencing of a Maryland Ku Klux Klan member who pleaded no contest to firing a gun at a white nationalist rally last summer.
Richard Preston was set to be sentenced Wednesday after entering the plea a day earlier to a charge of discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school.
But local media outlets report a judge ordered a presentencing report during a hearing Wednesday.
Court records show Preston is now set to be sentenced Aug. 21.
According to TV station WVIR, the judge is allowing Preston to leave Virginia to travel to his home in Baltimore.
Authorities said Preston was shown in video yelling and firing a handgun once while standing on a sidewalk crowded with rally-goers and counterprotesters. No one was struck.
