Missing Swimmer Found Dead At Beaver Dam In Baltimore County

COCKEYSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- There's sad news involving a missing man in Cockeysville. Baltimore County Police say they have pulled the body of 36-year-old Steve Jennings from a quarry at the Beaver Dam Swimming Club.

Rochelle Ritchie spoke with Jennings' family as divers searched the deep water.

The family says Steve Jennings, 36, knew how to swim. They're now trying to figure out how he ended up in the water.

Family members of Jennings say he was a father, a nephew and a friend who was loved dearly.

"I don't look at him as my nephew, I look at him as my brother. It's taken a real bad toll on me," said Jermaine Burwell, uncle.

Sadly, Jennings went missing Saturday afternoon while hanging out with friends at the Beaver Dam Swimming Club.

"The call into 911 stated there was an adult male missing from the location. He was last seen two hours prior in the water," said Cpl. John Wachter, Baltimore County Police Department.

For the next 24 hours, dive teams from Baltimore County Police would search the murky waters as Jennings' family, who tells WJZ he was prone to seizures, waited in a parking lot, anxiously overlooking the water and praying for the best.

"He could be out here wandering around or laying somewhere with a head injury or something," said Edna Dillard, aunt.

After hours of hoping and waiting, Baltimore County Police pulled the body of Jennings from the water.

Beaver Dam Swimming Club has had its share of drownings over the years. In 2001, a 20-year-old man drowned in the water. And in 2002, the club was ordered by the Baltimore County Circuit Court to pay $760,000 to the family of a 24-year-old woman who also drowned.

The family identified the body of Jennings at the scene.

Beaver Dam Swimming Club remained closed for the entire day as the search was underway.

According to police, Jennings is from New Carrollton.
