Sarbanes To Support Iran Nuclear Deal

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland Rep. John Sarbanes says he will support the nuclear deal with Iran.

Sarbanes, a Democrat, announced Monday he believes the plan will be effective in pulling Iran back from the threshold of becoming a nuclear weapon state for at least 10 to 12 years.

By contrast, Sarbanes says, walking away the agreement could leave the United States less informed about Iran's ambitions and less capable of mounting an effective response.

Sarbanes says he views the vote as one of the most important ones he will cast during his time in Congress.

Democrats clinched the crucial Senate votes Tuesday to block passage of a disapproval resolution against the accord. But supporters stopped short of declaring victory amid fast-paced developments as lawmakers returned to Washington from their five-week summer recess.
