Rural Neighbor Charged With Forgery In Missing Woman Case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — A western Maryland man with a 1971 kidnapping conviction is charged with stealing $4,000 from the bank account of a woman missing since July.

Court documents say 67-year Jerry Petry of Hancock was charged Thursday with forgery, illegal firearm possession, obstructing an investigation and stealing from a vulnerable adult.

He's being held with bail set at $25,000 while awaiting a bond review Friday afternoon in Hagerstown. No defense attorney is listed in court records.

Charging documents say Petry stole from 54-year-old Laurie Hendershot, a neighbor. Investigators say she was last seen July 7, in Petry's company.

Petry told investigators he last saw Hendershot June 14 when he drove her to the Hagerstown Greyhound bus station for a trip to an unknown destination for alcoholism treatment.
