Running & Walking Through The Fort McHenry Tunnel For A Great Cause

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--More than 41-million vehicles travel through it every year, but on Sunday you'll have a chance to run or walk through the Fort McHenry tunnel.

WJZ's Ron Matz has more on the annual  event which raises a lot of money for a great cause.

These runners are going where pedestrians aren't allowed, except for one day each year.

It's all part of the 7th annual Fort McHenry Tunnel 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Special Olympics Maryland.

"It's a unique event, to be able to run through the Fort McHenry tunnel is an experience like no other," said Jim Schmutz, President, Special Olympics Maryland.

Bore 4 will be closed, but motorists won't be affected.

"Beginning very late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, we will close the far right hand Bore of the tunnel, that's Bore 4. However, traffic will not be impeded because Bore 3 will still be open, so traffic will still be able to flow on I- 95 while the event is taking place," said Capt. Joseph Alton, MDTA Police.

Annu Singleton will be one of 15 Special Olympics athletes running the 5K.

"Saturday I will be kayaking at Washington College and then run the 5K Sunday. I'll give it my all," said Annu Singleton, Special Olympics athlete.

More than 800 people did it last year, raising more than $40,000 for Special Olympics Maryland.

"We'll have a great after party, catered by Mission Barbecue, It's right on the parking lot, it's a family fun event. How often do you get to go through the fort McHenry Tunnel not in a car or a vehicle?" said Captain Alton.

Sunday's 5K walk and run begins at 9:00 a.m.

This is the 7th annual Fort McHenry Tunnel Run and Walk.
