Report: Obamas Will Move To D.C. Mansion In January
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The first family will be staying in DC after President Barack Obama leaves office. The Obamas will be leasing a home in the wealthy Kalorama neighborhood in DC.
Tracey Leong has more on where they plan on settling after January.
The Obamas will be downsizing after they leave the White House, moving into a mansion about six times smaller.
Come January, the first family will say goodbye to their 55,000-square-foot-home on Pennsylvania Avenue and hello to an 8,200-square-foot beauty on Belmont Road.
Modest by comparison to the executive mansion, trading in the 132 bedroom, 35 bathroom estate for a cozier nine bedroom, 8.5 bathroom property.
"Happy to receive them here and I think they'll be happy to be here," said one neighbor.
People in the wealthy Kalorama area are looking forward to meeting their new neighbors.
The first family won't be moving too far: their new home is about three miles from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
"It's a neighborhood that has the convenience of the suburbs, but not a long walk to the White House," said a neighbor.
The first dogs will also have plenty to sniff. There's a spacious yard with room to play fetch.
The Kalorama mansion---located in northwest DC---is valued at more than $6 million.
Neighbors are already busy preparing the welcome wagon.
"Certainly they'll be invited with a lot of social opportunities," a neighbor said. "Not sure if they'll accept or not."
The Obamas plan on staying in DC until their younger daughter graduates from school.
