Public Safety Employees Holding Vigil In Maryland

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — Public safety employees in Maryland's Montgomery County are participating in a 24-hour vigil at the Montgomery County Public Safety Memorial ahead of a service to honor fallen officers.

Officials said in a statement that the vigil begins Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the memorial, which honors fallen members of the county's public safety agencies, including the police, fire, sheriff's office and department of correction and rehabilitation.

The vigil is being conducted ahead of a county memorial service on Wednesday. The memorial will be held before Police Week, when law enforcement officers and families visit Washington to participate in events honoring fallen officers.

The agencies participating in Wednesday's event include the Montgomery County Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and the Montgomery County division of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police.
