Prince George's Schools Seek Waiver For Snow Days

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- The Prince George's County Public Schools are seeking a state waiver for four snow days to avoid having to extend the school year.

School officials tell The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1fxW52O ) they requested the waiver this week. Maryland requires 180 instructional days. But Prince George's has canceled classes eight times for snow.

Schools Chief Executive Kevin Maxwell says this has been a trying winter. He says the school board planned four weather days at the end of the year, but that wasn't enough this year.

On Friday, Maryland school leaders denied Anne Arundel County's request for a waiver of five instructional days due to snow. Montgomery County school officials said they have not heard a decision on their request.

State officials have granted a similar request by St. Mary's County schools.
