Police Say Va. Toddler Accidentally Shoots Self With Handgun

LUNENBURG, Va. (AP) -- Police say a toddler accidentally shot himself after finding a loaded handgun on top of a dresser.

The shooting occurred on Monday morning at a residence in the Meherrin area of Lunenburg County.

Lunenburg County Sheriff Arthur Townsend tells media outlets that the 2-year-old boy was alone in a bedroom when he found and accidentally fired the gun.

Townsend says the boy was taken to VCU Medical Center. His condition wasn't immediately known.

Townsend says the boy and his parents were visiting the residence.

The sheriff says family members are cooperating in the investigation. No charges have been filed.
