Police: Attempted Abduction at Bel Air High School
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- An adult man held a teenage female at gunpoint near Bel Air High School, according to the Bel Air Police Department.
Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call from the victim saying she was held at gunpoint by a white man in his 30's in the area of Homestead Street.
The girl told police she didn't see which way the man fled and police couldn't locate the man after placing Bel Air High School on lockdown.
Some people who live in Bel Air are wondering if this was all a hoax.
The police chief told WJZ the teen changed some of her story later in the evening to the point where she was no longer sure of the description she'd given of the alleged suspect.
The police chief says an officer arrived within minutes, but there was no suspect in sight and neighbors saw nothing.
To complicate matters even more, police say the teen girl said she didn't know what direction the suspect took off in.
"Well, if somenbody is upset, there is a tendency for some time if you experience a stressfull event, you could block some of it out, so it could happen," said Chief Charles Moore of the Bel Air Police Department.
Concerned parents flooded Facebook with comments, but there were others who praised the district.
"Because we were notified in a reasonable amount of time and everyone was aware of the situation when it happened. So I don't think it was too much of a concern because Harford County did their job," said one parent.
The teen who has not been identified was found not even a block away from the high school. The chief told WJZ she was absent from classes on Tuesday.
The police department continues to investigate but the chief says right now, there is no need for concern.
"We were there pretty quick and if there is validity to this story, if we get more information that they need to be aware of, that we will get it out fast," said Moore.
Police say they're looking into if there were any surveillance cameras in the area. That would back up the teen's story.
The teen was not hurt. She was later released to her parents.
