Police Investigate Slaying Of State Prison Inmate In Jessup

JESSUP, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say they're investigating the slaying of a state prison inmate at the maximum-security Jessup Correctional Institution in Jessup.

The agency said in a statement Tuesday that investigators have identified another inmate as a suspect in the beating death of 58-year-old Glenn Smith. Police say the suspect's name won't be released until charges are placed.

Police say Smith was last seen uninjured on Jan. 17, before cells were locked for the night. The next morning, his cellmate told a correctional officer that Smith was hurt.

Smith died at Shock Trauma in Baltimore on Jan. 21.

Police say the death was ruled a homicide, from multiple blunt force injuries.

Smith was sentenced in Wicomico County in 2002 to life for rape, burglary and other offenses.
