Police Identify Pregnant Woman Found Dead In Her Home; Death Ruled Homicide

ROSEDALE, Md. (WJZ)—A gruesome discovery inside of a Rosedale home is now being investigated as a murder. The victim was a 33-year-old woman who was pregnant full term.

Rochelle Ritchie has the details.

It is a double dose of heartbreak for the victim's family. They were not home Monday to speak with WJZ, but neighbors share in the disgust and disbelief of the two lives taken.

It's inside a light blue home on Travis Court in Rosedale, where Baltimore County Police say a pregnant woman, Summer Shemida Smith, was found murdered.

"Very tragic, very shocking. Unfortunately, the baby did not survive," said Cpl. John Wachter, Baltimore County Police.

Baltimore County Police were called to the home Friday evening after they say Smith's mother found her daughter, who was in the final stages of her pregnancy, lifeless.

"Oh, wow. It just adds to the devastation, really bad," said Edwin Green, neighbor.

Baltimore County Police say while they are investigating Smith's death as a homicide, depending on what comes back from the Medical Examiner's Office will determine if this is considered a double homicide.

"The detectives will review that and decide if they will press any charges when they get a suspect," Wachter said.

No one was home when WJZ tried to speak with family members, but neighbors next door say it was clear Smith was pregnant, and the family was thrilled about the new addition.

"I say, 'You have two twins, one baby or two baby?' She said,  'Just one.' She was happy. I am real, real sad," a neighbor said.

At this time, police say they do not have any suspects and believe Smith may have been targeted.

"This is not random," Wachter said.

While that is comforting news to neighbors, they say it does little for a grieving family.

"Life will never be the same, and my heart goes out to her family. I pray for them, and I pray for the one who did it. I hope he will come forward and justice will be served for that person," a neighbor said.

Police say while they are not naming any suspects, if anyone has information on this murder, call 410-307-2020.

The cause of death has not been released.
