Police Identify Maryland Officer Who Fatally Shot Man

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — Authorities in Maryland have released the name of a police officer who fatally shot a man during a physical confrontation.

The Montgomery County Police Department issued a statement Tuesday identifying the officer as Anand Badgujar. He has roughly two years with the department and has been placed on administrative leave.

Badgujar on Monday fatally shot an unidentified black man who police Chief J. Thomas Manger says became "combative" in a parking lot of a townhouse community in Silver Spring.

Police have not released the name of the deceased.

It's not yet clear what led to the deadly altercation. The patrolman had come to the area on an unrelated call. Manger says the man who was shot "multiple times" was apparently unarmed.

Investigators are reviewing video from Badgujar's body-worn camera.
