Police Identify Man Killed By Off-Duty Officer In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- New video shows the moments inside a liquor store where an off-duty police officer opened fire on a man, killing him.

It happened Friday on west Baltimore and Calhoun streets.

You can see the suspect with what looks like a gun. He approaches a plainclothes police officer, who then fires.

Investigators say the man tried to rob the officer.

They identified that suspect as Robert Howard.

Saturday, Police Commissioner Kevin Davis says he's standing by the officer, who has not been identified.

"That detective yesterday is an absolute hero. He acted courageously. He acted within the limits of his training," Davis said. "He did absolutely the right thing."

He has been placed on routine administrative leave.
