Police: Girl, 3, Fatally Shot At Housing Complex In DC

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Police say a 3-year-old girl has been fatally shot in southeast Washington and preliminary information shows that another child may have been playing with a gun when it discharged, striking the girl.

Police say the shooting happened Wednesday night at the Benning Terrace housing complex on 46th Place southeast. Police identified the girl Thursday as Dalis Cox of southeast Washington.

Police initially tweeted a description of a suspect but later said at a news conference that they were not looking for that person and had no information about a suspect to provide. Police spokesman Paul Metcalf said the girl was not responsive when officers found her and she was taken to a hospital. She later died.

An autopsy is planned.
