Couple Found Dead Was To Sign Divorce Papers That Day

BRUNSWICK, Md. (AP) -- Frederick County authorities say a man and woman were scheduled to sign divorce papers on the day they were found dead in a car shortly after the woman's Brunswick apartment building was set on fire.

Investigators are working to determine whether 44-year-old Daniel Shortt fatally shot his 27-year-old wife, Kelly. Their bodies and a handgun registered to Shortt were found in his car on Monday, several miles from the fire.

Investigators also found gasoline cans in the trunk. They say there was evidence of an accelerant at the fire scene, and they believe Shortt started the fire.

Investigators said Wednesday that Shortt had picked up his wife at a convenience store and was seen about an hour later running from the rear of the apartment building as smoke appeared.
