Polar Bear Plunge Into Potomac Pushed Back To Jan. 18

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) -- Those hardy souls taking a New Year's Day dip in the Potomac River at Williamsport are finding some changes to the chilly event this year.

Town officials decided last fall to take charge of the event run for 10 years by the Humane Society of Washington County. The town turned Wednesday's plunge into a fundraiser for the county Boys and Girls Club and Williamsport fire and rescue services.

The Humane Society is moving its Polar Bear Plunge to Jan. 18 at Greenbrier State Park near Boonsboro.

Last year's event at Williamsport drew nearly 370 plungers and raised more than $11,000 for Humane Society.
