Perry Hall Community Banding Together To Build New Playground

PERRY HALL, Md. (WJZ) -- Hundreds come together to uplift their community. An all-inclusive playground is being built in Perry Hall to accommodate children with special needs.

The goal is to build Angel Park in ten days using all volunteers, WJZ's Tracey Leong reports.

"I lost my son Ryan 18 years ago to leukemia, and it's just something I wanted to do to keep his memory alive," said Kelli Szczybor, park co-founder.

Szczybor has decided to turn her tragedy into something positive. She is setting out to help families who have also lost loved ones or have children with special needs.

"It grew into helping all children and give them a safe place to play," said she said.

With the help of friends, family and neighbors, the Angel Park project raised $1,5 million to create an all-inclusive playground and amphitheater in Perry Hall.

The park is designed to eliminate barriers using specialized equipment for children with special needs. The project is being constructed by an all-volunteer crew.

"All these people coming together for a good project, donating money, manpower, tools and making it a great community event," said Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County Executive.

Children and adults are helping at all stages to create the 16,000 square foot park -- from the artwork to the construction.

"Feel lucky that, one, my company supports this kind of program, and we work and live in community where they come together for this great cause," said John Garst, Home Depot manager.

If you are looking to help out with the project, people of all ages and skills are invited.
