Orioles To Allow Connaughton To Play Basketball For Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Pat Connaughton says he's reached an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles that will allow him to return to Notre Dame in late July to prepare for his final season of college basketball.

The Orioles drafted the 6"5" pitcher last week in the fourth round. The right-hander plans to travel to Baltimore on Tuesday, then head to Sarasota, Fla., later in the week to begin his minor league career.

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey says the experience should make Connaughton a better captain and leader. Brey says he's happy to have Connaughton and leading scorer Jerian Grant back next season. Grant was suspended the spring semester for an academic violation and the Irish finished 15-17.
