On-Duty Baltimore Cop Charged With Assault, Pointing Gun At Wife & Her Boyfriend

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A city police officer is charged with a felony after police say he attacked his wife and her boyfriend. He was on duty and in uniform at the time. It's just the latest in a string of cases where city officers abuse their power.

Christie Ileto spoke to the victim in this latest incident.

Officer Gualberto Diaz was supposed to be on the clock. Instead, police say he drove his squad car to the home of his wife's boyfriend, Ajlan Abdulla.

The chaos inside Abdulla's apartment tells the story of a violent love triangle.

"He broke the bottom door and then he broke a second one," he said.

Charging documents show the 35-year-old is filled with rage. He tore the front door off its hinges, punched and kicked his wife in the face and head and then pointed his service weapon at her, allegedly saying he was going to kill her.

"I think Mr. Diaz acted so far out of the realm of what is acceptable," said Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez.

Top brass say the ugly allegations are made worse by the fact that Diaz was on duty and dressed in full uniform.

"I turn around, I see him, he's pointing the gun to my face. I have a little chance and then I have to run," the boyfriend said.

Fearing for his life, Abdulla smashed through a second story window and ran to his neighbor's house to get help.

"He was looking for my uncle so he came to me, put the gun to my head and said, `Where's he at?'" his nephew, Gibreen Alsmat, said.

"An individual used their role as a police officer to solve some of their personal issues," Rodriguez said.

Issues they say Diaz never disclosed when he returned to work.

Diaz is at the Baltimore City Detention Center without bail.
