Officials: Man Dies at Maryland Detention Center

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a detainee has died at Prince George's County's detention center.

The county Department of Corrections said in a statement that medical staff found the 43-year-old man unresponsive and without a pulse Wednesday night. They performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Officials say the medical examiner's office has preliminarily ruled that natural causes led to the man's death, but an autopsy will be performed.

Officials did not identify the man, but they say he had been in custody since Aug. 30. He was being held on $750,000 bail as he awaited trial on charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and a firearm. Officials say he had been housed in the medical unit.

Prince George's County police are investigating.
