Officer Who Shot Armed Man Was 9-Year Veteran

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County police say an officer who shot and killed an armed man is a nine-year law enforcement veteran.

Police identified the officer on Sunday as Officer Brian Newcomer, who works in patrol in the third district.

Police say Newcomer was one of two officers who heard shots being fired early Saturday morning in Upper Marlboro. The officers approached a man and Newcomer saw him reaching for a handgun in his waistband. Newcomer fired several shots, and 24-year-old Robert Jones of Forestville was killed. Police recovered Jones' handgun from the scene.

The officers were uninjured, and Newcomer is on routine administrative leave.
