Multiple law enforcement agencies are in Ocean City to help investigate after bones were found in a suitcase.

A couple wading in the water Tuesday morning stumbled upon the suitcase that contained bones and burned personal effects, including shoes and clothes, according to the Worcester County Sheriff's Office.

Maryland State Police and the Department of Natural Resources Police were on the scene off Homer Gudelsky Park.

The discovery concerned those visiting the beach.

"It's kind of scary just to have a suitcase with bones in it and a bunch of police officers," Sierra Deitz, a beachgoer said.

"I was just really surprised, it was kind of scary because of how much we come down here," Lea Fritz, another beachgoer said. "It's just really a homey, family place. To know that that happened, it's just kind of scary."

A dive team was called to remove the suitcase from the water to and determine what else is in it. Investigators said the bones appeared to be burned.

"We're having it done this way to preserve any type of evidence that may be in it," said Worcester County Sheriff's Office Lt. Edward Schreier. "Once we get it out of the water, we can get into it, look at it- see what's in it. And determine if the bones are human in nature or something else."
